Goanna Headland

Goanna Headland at Evans Head is a place of profound significance to the Bundjalung Nation. In Bundjalung tradition, the headland is identified with the Dirawong, a powerful creator being, and the surrounding landscape contains numerous sacred, ceremonial and archaeological sites. At least 24 Aboriginal archaeological sites have been recorded across the headland. The area also has a difficult colonial history, with records linking Evans Head and Goanna Headland to a massacre in the early 1840s.
